Cards I Aspire To One Day Own
When it comes to cards, I can be a bit greedy. I have so many, yet I want more and more and more. Unfortunately, my cards are not organized and are in boxes without any rhyme or reason. So, I am currently, in the midst of organizing my cards, slowly. Since there are so may cards, this will take a lot of time. Especially since time is limited for me right now. But as I go through them, I uncover a few gems I had forgot I had, so it's turning into a fun time.
Fuji over at The Chronicles Of Fuji, is doing the same thing I am is is discovering he has some real nice cards. Check out his blog post at:http://sanjosefuji.blogspot.com/2014/07/yeah-thats-ticket.html
Like Fuji, I am finding gems, but I am also working on various player PC's. Some I've been working on for a while, like my Pennington, Teixeira, Tino and Ewing and others I'm starting work on like my Jeter and Curtis Martin. Working on my PC's got me thinking about cards I'd love to add to my various collections. Maybe one day I can own some of these.
1973 Topps Roberto Clemente
I had this card. I remember trading about 10 of my prized Yankee cards for it back in the early 1980's. It somehow disappeared from my collection and wound up in a friend's pile. Of course, he claimed it was his, which was a bold face lie. It was a wreck at that point, so I didn't argue with him. I want it back now. Not because it was his last Topps card, but because it was my first Roberto card I ever owned.
1993 SP Derek Jeter
Now, I have only started putting all my Jeter cards in a binder and I have a lot of Jeter cards. More than I originally thought. I also have quite a few of his rookie cards. But I don't own THE rookie card and that would be the 1993 SP card. This one is the expensive card. I see these cards on eBay go for $99.00 to $150.00 raw. There was a dealer asking $479.00 for a slabbed one, graded BGS 9.
1986 -87 Fleer Patrick Ewing
Funny thing, I am not really a rookie card collector. I don't break open packs of Bowman, looking for that high dollar card. To me, that's not what collecting is about. So I never went looking for rookie cards. Now, I am regretting that. I have another rookie I would love to have in my collection.
I've been a Ewing fan ever since I watched him with Georgetown. When the Knicks won the number 1 draft pick and grabbed Ewing, I was elated. Ewing has been my all time favorite Knick and for me not to have his rookie card is a crime (at least to me). Thankfully, it's not too expensive, so I should be able to pick it up sometime soon.
1969 Topps Mickey Mantle
I don't own any Mickey Mantle cards. OK, let me rephrase that. I don't own any vintage Mickey Mantle cards. For me to own just one would be a big deal to me as I am a Mantle fan. I don't have a Mantle PC, but I still want to own a Mantle card. I picked this card only because it's relatively affordable. I can pick up a nice card for under $100.00, unslabbed. Slabbed, I'm looking to drop $150.00 large and up. Not too bad for a Mickey Mantle card. Better than dropping $200-$400 dollars for a 1959 Topps card.
Going through the cards I already have and finding lost gems is already making a good collection even better. I hope that I can one day add these cards and make my collection even better. I will never stop looking for cards to add to my collections, but that is the life of a collector, isn't it. Always on the hunt for those precious cards to add to various collections. But, it's also fun to own a piece of sports history. I may never have seen Roberto Clemente throw a runner out at third from the warning track or seen Mickey Mantle launch one of his famous tape measure home runs. But I feel owning their cards is just as good. Owning their cards is almost like owning a piece of Americana.

Autographs. What Do I Need?
One of my main goals for 2014 is to get back into the autographing game. I used to love going to the old Yankee Stadium and just wait outside the players entrance and try to get some baseball cards, baseballs or pictures signed by various Yankees and other players.
As I got older and the hobby grew, I got tired of having to deal with pushy collectors and dealers for autographs, so I stopped hanging outside the ballpark. A lot of collectors will push an old lady out of their way for a signature. It's disgusting.
I started attending signings were it's more of a controlled environment (sometimes), even if I sometimes had to pay for the privilege of having my item signed or picking up what the player will sign. Then the prices started going up and I stopped going to those as well.
To fill my autograph needs I started buying certified autographed cards. I filled a lot of holes this way and I will still continue to pick up autographs as long as the price is right. I also sent a lot of requests through the mail, or TTM as we call it in the autograph community. Due to lack of time, the letters stopped going out and I completely stopped collecting autographs.
Being able to attend the NFL festivities this past week not only got me wanting to get back into the hobby but also got me thinking about what autographs I want to add to my collection. Now, I have a lot of nice certified signed cards, players like Derek Jeter, Joe Namath, Walt Frazier, Martin Brodeur and even a Babe Ruth.
What I want to add is more signed baseballs, photos, magazines, etc. I also started thinking about which players I want to add. I would like to also one day get a few jerseys signed, but I have a hard time buying jerseys for me to wear, much less buy them for autographing purposes.
So, I kind of came up with a "wish list" of players I want to have something other than a card signed. Meaning, I may already have a card signed by the player, I just want something I can display on a shelf or on my wall. Something that will grab anyone's attention as they enter wherever I ultimately display my stuff. Hopefully in my home.
I also narrowed the list down to players who are still living. Kind of hard to get a someone who's passed on to sign a ball for you. That being said, here's the list
1-Derek Jeter
Jeter is one of the most expensive autographs you can buy (Thanks a lot Brandon Steiner for that.). A legit signed Jeter can run you anywhere from $150.00 to about $500.00. Jeter is also a tough signature to get. Listening to various collectors, Jeter may only sign for children and women or not at all. Then there was the report that came out a couple of years ago where collectors would be lined up outside the Yankees complex in Tampa when Jeter was rehabbing, waiting for him to come out. He would either pull up his car and sign a handful or none at all leaving collectors who waited as early as 4am to walk away empty handed. Jeter might be one of those I may have to save my pennies and buy.
I'd either love to have a ball
Or a framed signed photo
2-Wayne Gretzky
As a hockey fan, I feel it's imperative to own an autograph of the greatest player to ever skate. Gretzky can be a pricy autograph as well, with signed pucks going for about $200 dollars, but sometimes you can find a signed puck in the $75 dollar range if you look hard enough. I have heard that Gretzky is accommodating when approached. That said, I will be keeping an eye out for appearances by The Great One this year.
I would like to have a signed puck for my 500 goal scorers PC
And maybe a photo
I would get some Kings stuff signed as well. Just no Rangers Gretzky.
3-Mike Bossy
As one of my all time favorite hockey players, you would think I would already have Bossy in my collection, and you would be right. I have a few certified cards in my Bossy PC, but I don't have any signed memorabilia of his. That should change come March when Bossy does a card show not too far from the Nassau Coliseum where he played during is career. I am of mind that I don't care what it will cost to have him sign for me. Bossy signed pucks are among the most relatively inexpensive for a NHL Hall Of Famers and of the all time great snipers in the history of the game and I could have picked one up a few times. Reason why I haven't is because I really want to meet one of my childhood heroes and I just may have that opportunity next month.
I really want a signed puck to put on my Bossy shelf when I put one up.
I hope to also add a signed photo and McFarlane figure at some point.
4-Jason Giambi
Now, admittedly, Giambi's Yankee career was not what we expected him to ultimately have. Plus there was PED allegations, the gold thong and that horrible porn stache he rocked at the very end, but he was still a Yankee and I want to add one particular piece to my collection. Yes, I would get a baseball, as I want a signed ball from as many Yankees as I can get, but I want Giambi to sign one of his Sports Illustrated covers. His Yankee cover was very cool and I think it would look fantastic on my wall.
With Giambi signing to play with the Indians this upcoming season, I may have my shot at getting him to sign one. I just have to find this issue.
5-Patrick Ewing
Ewing is my all time favorite Knick. I do have a PC of Ewing and nothing would be better if I could add a Ewing signed basketball to my Knicks signed ball collection. Ewing is a tough autograph to get. I did hear rumors that while he worked for the Knicks MSG playoff games in studio he would sign a couple after leaving, so I missed out on him. His autographs are pretty expensive, going for anywhere from $200 dollars for a certified card to $700 dollars for a signed basketball. I will have to be lucky to add Ewing to my collection.
I would love to add a signed basketball
Or this image that remains one of my favorites in Knicks history
6-Gordie Howe
Howe is another autograph that any hockey fan needs in his collection. Gordie was considered the greatest player until number 99 donned the ice and broke all of Howe's records. Howe used to sign through the mail for free, but once the hobby boomed that stopped. Howe is one of those missed opportunities that I kick myself for and will be another that I will have to purchase as at his age appearances are very rare. Howe is pretty inexpensive for someone of his stature, averaging about $75 dollars.
I would love to add a Howe signed puck for my 500 goal scorers PC
7-Mariano Rivera
One of my all time favorite Yankees. With all due respect to Mr. Jeter, the Yankees do not win all those World Series if it wasn't for Mariano. With his retirement, I actually expect Rivera to be around making appearances. I missed out on a few last summer, but I will not do so again if I can help it. Like Jeter, Rivera's autograph has become pricey (Thanks again Brandon Steiner), but I am confident that I can get Rivera at an appearance.
I do want a Rivera signed ball pretty badly
But this signed photo makes me drool every time I see it.
8-Martin Broduer
I don't care what anyone says. Martin Broduer is the greatest goalie that ever played the game. End of story. Save the arguments for Roy, Sawchuck, Belfour or Parent. The numbers back up my claim. All time wins leader, check. All time shutouts leader, check. 3 Stanley Cups, 4 Vezina Trophys and 2 Olympic gold medals support my argument. I have had the pleasure of meeting Broduer a few years ago when he made an appearance at the NHL Store here in NYC and got a 5x7 signed photo the store gave out. I have also acquired a couple of signed photos, but what I don't have is a signed puck and I would like to add one this year. I have a Broduer PC of cards, figures, pucks and other stuff. Would like that signed puck for the PC.
9-Joe Klecko
When I first started watching football, Joe Klecko was a player I really liked. He was a hard nosed player who made All Pro at 3 different positions. How is this man not in the Pro Football Hall Of Fame? It's a joke that he is not enshrined in Canton. I haven't really seen Klecko making any apperances, but he does work at SNY doing the Jets post game shows and the studio is in NYC, so I could have waited outside the studio for him to come out, but because Sunday is Jets day and I am usually home or it's cold, I never went.
I would love to add a Klecko signed mini helmet to my Jets PC
10-Tino Martinez
My favorite all time Yankee. Tino was intense, a fantastic glove and a great bat on those World Series clubs during the 90's and early 2000's. Another player who I have a PC of as well as a few signed certified cards and a mini helmet, I don't have a signed baseball from him. He's been my Moby Dick, very elusive. Each time he is scheduled to make an appearance I ether miss out for one reason or he winds up cancelling. My last chance was when I was in Los Angeles and he was still coaching the Marlins. I waited after the game for him to come out and sign but after about a half hour I wound u leaving with my girlfriend, who was a heck of a trooper for waiting. The next day, my buddy Dodger Bobble tells me he came out 10 minutes after I left and signed. I just can't win.
I want a signed ball to add to my Tino PC
There are a lot of other players I would love to add to my collection. Hall of Fame players like Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripkin Jr or Sandy Koufax. Legends like Vin Scully, Teemu Selanne and Terry Bradshaw as well as players from my favorite teams like Bernie Williams, Walt Frazier, John Tavares and John Starks. I hope I can add all of these players to my collection at some point. I know it will take a lot of work and probably money, but believe that if you work hard enough and want it bad enough, you can have anything you want in life. Lucky for me, my dreams are pretty simple. If I can get all of these signatures, I'll be a pretty happy guy.

New Additions To The Sports Room
Man, do I love a good mail day. It's seems like it's been forever since my post office box was filled with anything. It sucks opening up the mail box and not seeing that familiar yellow bubble envelope filled with card goodness. Yesterday, I got 3 of those beautiful envelopes in my box and I tore through them as soon as I got back home.
The first envelope was from my buddy, Chris. Chris is the A's collector in the team collectors group I am a part of and he sent me a sweet 2 bag envelope with both Yankees and Knicks cards. Chris knows what I collect and he made sure there was stuff I needed for my collection.
First, Chris added a couple of cards for my Mark Teixeira PC
2013 Bowman base
2009 O-Pee-Chee. What I like about this card is it's a preview card. Don't believe me?
Told you so.
And he added a nice 2007 Upper Deck Ultimate Star game used jersey card.
He also threw in these nice Yankee cards
Sometimes I think Topps has gone parallel crazy with these diamond and cognac cards.
Love these Topps 60 inserts
And he threw in this 2009 Sweet Spot Sweet Swatch Memorabilia Dave Winfield game used jersey card
And if you thought Chris was done, you'd be wrong because he also added some nice Knicks cards for my PC.
Some nice Ewing cards:
And some more Knicks cards:
A Channing Frye Topps Star Rookie #'ed to 549. He's currently with the Phoenix Suns, but has been sidelined with an enlarged heart and didn't play all season. Hope he is able to make a comeback next season.
Stephon Marbury Topps Star gold parallel #'ed to 325
Stephon Marbury Topps Star black & white parallel '#ed to 225
And just for giggles, here is the base version. I hear he is still playing in China and won a CBA title in 2012. It's too bad he became the face of all that was wrong with the Knicks while he was here. I still think he could have helped, but he feuded with Larry Brown, chased Keith Van Horne out of NY like he did in New Jersey and refused to play when Mike D'Antoni wanted to get him some minutes. I wonder if he regrets that now. He might have still been in the league had he shown some humility when D'Antoni offered to play him or when the Celtics offered him a contract. Hope he's happier in China.
Thanks Chris for the awesome cards for my collection. I have a package for you as well. I just have to get it to the post office.
Next up is a trade I made on a sports card forum I am a part of. I was offered a David Lee game used/autographed card for next to nothing, so I pulled the trigger and it arrived yesterday.
Didn't scan that well thanks to the screwdown case it's in. I couldn't find a phillips screwdriver to take it out for the scan, so I just scanned the card as is. I assure you, it's a sweet looking card.
Finally, I got this insert in from eBay for the Ewing collection.
1997-98 Flair Showcase Grace. Snagged this card for 1.00 shipped. Too good a deal to pass up.
It's days like yesterday that make me happy. I filled some holes in my various collections and can move on and try to fill some others. Now, maybe I can find some time this weekend to do some much needed organizing.
Happy Memorial Day everyone!

New Additions To My Patrick Ewing PC
A couple of weeks ago, I posted a blog showing off cards from my David Lee PC. David Lee is one of my favorite Knicks of all time...but not the ultimate favorite. That honor goes to number 33, Patrick Ewing. I first became aware of Ewing while he was playing with Georgetown. I was watching St. John's basketball at the time and saw the epic battles between Chris Mullin and the then Red Men and Ewing and the Hoyas. Those were some great games, which Georgetown got the last laugh, winning the Big East Title that year. Ewing would go #1 to the Knicks in the 1985 NBA Draft and he became, arguably, the greatest Knick ever.
In 16 seasons, Ewing averaged 21.0 points, 9.8 rebounds, 2.4 blocks a game and shot better than 50% for his career. He was an 11 time All Star, an NBA Rookie Of The Year, an NCAA Champion, a charter member of the Dream Team which won Olympic Gold, was named to the NBA 50 Greatest list, had his number retired by the Knicks and was elected to the Basketball Hall Of Fame. All those accomplishments, but my fondest memory of Ewing was after the Knicks finally made it to the NBA Finals, Ewing jumped up on the broadcast table and celebrated with his arms outstretched.
I saw a T shirt of that image made and I want it.
I started a Ewing PC a year ago and have been able to add some nice cards. No autographs and just 2 game used cards because Ewing stuff is pretty pricey. Most of the nicer Ewing cards I own are inserts, which is fine because I am a fan of inserts and the 90's had a lot of them. I'll show some of my favorites in a later post.
A couple of friends of mine recently sent me cards and in them were some pretty sweet Ewing cards.
1997-98 Upper Deck Star Attractions Die Cut Insert
1998 UD Choice Starquest
1994-95 Flair Scoring Power Insert
1995-96 Fleer Double Double Insert
1994-95 Flair Big Numbers Insert
1995-96 Upper Deck Electric Court
1991-92 NBA Hoops Team Card
1996-97 Topps Chrome Championship Spirit Insert.
I got some really nice cards to add to the growing Ewing PC, so I'd like to thank my buddies for the new additions. I'm always looking on eBay and card shows for Ewing cards that I don't own. Would love to own a Ewing autograph one day, I'm always looking for deals on one. Ewing is not much of a signer, so his autograph is a good 2-300 dollars, which means my collection will not have one for quite sometime.
I got to see Ewing from the very beginning to the end of his career. Collecting Ewing is like reliving my youth when Ewing, Mark Jackson and Anthony Mason were running Madison Square Garden. No matter who comes along or if Carmelo Anthony wins an NBA Championship as a Knick, no one will replace Patrick Ewing as my favorite New York Knick.
